LIBRARY: EBSCOhost Database
EBSCOhost
Through EBSCOhost HUGSR students have access to the following indexes: Christian Periodical Index, Catholic Periodical and Literature Index, Index to Jewish Periodicals, Philosopher’s Index, PsycINFO, PsycARTICLES, and the ATLA Religion Database. The URL is http://search.ebscohost.com/. The “Philosophy of Religion, Apologetics, and Ethics” assignment has a section on using the Philosopher’s Index. There is a separate assignment on the ATLA Religion Database. The user ID is the same as the authorization number(enter the 9 numbers in a string without hyphens or spaces) for OCLC FirstSearch, and the password is the same as the OCLC FirstSearch password.
Click on EBSCOhost Research Databases and choose database you would like to search. You may search from all simultaneously, but each database has its own idiosyncrasies. Click on continue.
In the Advanced Search there is a choice of search modes. The default search mode is Boolean/phrase. In this mode all search fields are “phrase” search fields; a title must be searched exactly or by a phrase within the title not by keywords from the title, and in searching more than one subject simultaneously the subject headings must be entered in separate search fields or connected by the Boolean “and” in one search field. The second search mode is find all my search terms; terms entered in a search field are automatically connected with an “and.” In Advanced Search there are search options, which vary in each database. To change search options after entering a search, click on Advanced Search to return to original search screen. This deletes previous search options and new options can be entered. The All Text field allows keyword searches of all parts of the entries: titles, abstracts, etc.
Christian Periodical Index
Provides subject, author, and book review indexing to about 112 conservative and/or evangelical periodicals. Indexing of material from 1982 (and some earlier) to present and retrospective indexing for some volumes not indexed in the print version are available through this database.
Subject headings in entries cannot be hot linked if separated by dashes. Hold cursor on subject to see what will be searched. Note the subject heading and manually enter it in a search field. In Advanced Search can limit search by journal, date, or document type.
Search Scripture in subject field; enter title of biblical book and chapter in Roman numerals, followed by a comma and verses in Arabic numbers (e.g., Genesis III, 15). Enter books of the Bible with more than one book as follows: Corinthians, 2nd.
Index to Jewish Periodicals
Provides subject, author, and book review indexing to “220 English language journals of general and scholarly interest” (according to the 2007 volume). Most of these are Jewish periodicals, but also includes several others such as Journal of Biblical Literature, Journal for the Study of the O.T., Religion and American Culture, and Religious Studies. Indexing of material from 1988 to present is available through this database.
In Advanced Search can limit search by journal and date.
Search Scripture in subject field by entering Bible. N.T. or O.T., and book of Bible (e.g. Bible. O.T. Ruth or Bible. N.T. Philemon). For books of the Bible with more than one book do not indicate 1st, 2nd, etc. There is no way to search by chapter and verse.
Catholic Periodical and Literature Index
Provides subject, author, and book review indexing to about 150 Catholic journals and to some multi-author works. Indexing of material from 1981 to present is available through this database.
In Advanced Search can limit search by publication, date, publication type, and language.
Can browse search fields by clicking on “indexes” above the EBSCOhost icon in the upper left-hand corner of screen.
To retrieve book reviews, enter the full title of the book in the book title field. Do not enter the author of the book in the author field.
Scripture can be searched in the “Scripture Citation” field beginning with 2002. Scripture searches for material published earlier must be searched in the subject field. Enter title of biblical book; cannot search these years by chapter and verse. In subject and Scripture citation search enter books of Bible with more than one book as follows: Corinthians, 2nd.
Information on individuals can be searched in the subjects-names field.
